Saffron, two ways.

Saffron can be extracted two ways, and they don’t do the same job. Steeped in oil, it releases safranal — the aroma and the golden warmth — which is what we use in oils and balms. Steeped in glycerin and water, it releases crocin, the water-soluble antioxidant behind saffron’s brightening reputation. SOHA uses the water-side extract, because a jelly serum needs what dissolves in water.

The green thread in everything.

Every ZAA'N Beauty formula carries a touch of galbanum — the resin of Ferula galbaniflua, a plant that grows wild in the mountains of Iran. Persians have used it for thousands of years; it was prized in Egyptian and Roman perfumery. We use both the resin extract and the essential oil: the resin is skin-soothing and naturally purifying, the oil gives that quiet, green, just-picked scent. If every ZAA'N Beauty product smells like the same garden — that’s why.

Geranium, leaf and flower.

We use both parts of the geranium, and they behave differently. The leaf gives the oil — the part that helps balance oil on skin and scalp, so it shows up in both our face rituals and our hair line. The flower gives the softer, rosy side that soothes and comforts. One plant, two jobs, skin and hair.

Yarrow, the healer’s herb.

Yarrow’s Latin name, Achillea, comes from Achilles — legend says he used it on his soldiers’ wounds. Persian herbalists have relied on it for centuries as a calming, purifying plant. We make our own yarrow extract and use it where skin and scalp need settling: reactive complexions, tight or itchy scalps. Quiet, but it’s one of the hardest workers in the pouch.

Why we make our own extracts.

Most brands buy a saffron “extract” that is mostly glycerin with a trace of saffron. We steep real Persian saffron threads in small batches in our own lab, so we know exactly what went in and how strong it is. It’s slower. It’s also the whole point.

Pomegranate, the Persian way.

Persian gardens have grown pomegranate for over 4,000 years — the word itself travels through Persian anar. NAAR is named for it. We use the extract for its calming polyphenols on skin that flushes, reacts, or breaks out easily.
